Compliance with AS 4084:2023 - Australian Standard for Steel Storage Racking

Did you know there is a new updated Australian Standard for Steel Storage Racking AS 4084:2023?

What is AS 4084:2023?

AS 4084:2023 is the Australian Standards document for steel storage racking, outlining the specifications, procedures and guidelines that must be followed. The Australian Standard for Steel Storage Racking has been updated for the first time since 2012. On 12th May 2023, a revised standard for Steel Storage Racking AS 4084:2023 was issued by Standards Australia.

APC are here to help

APC are here to answer any questions you may have about the new standard and what it will mean for your business. Our team of engineers have spent countless hours reading through the updated standard, and we want to assure you that we are here to help.

Is APC compliant with AS 4084:2023?

APC offers our clients a complete Warehouse Design and Engineering Service. Our engineering team use the latest structural analysis software to perform non-linear, second-order analysis on each racking system we design, manufacture and install. To ensure the software analysis of our racking designs are accurate, APC’s Research and Development Team perform a wide range of independent physical testing, where the results are directly imputed into our structural analysis software. This extensive physical testing and modelling procedure is undertaken so the requirements of AS 4084:2023 and other relevant standards are met within all our designs. How is AS 4084:2023 different?

The previous standard AS 4084:2012 has been replaced with AS 4084:2023 and the new standard has been split into two sections as follows:

  • AS 4084:2023 Part 1 – Design
  • AS 4084:2023 Part 2 – Operation and maintenance

In the updated standard our team of engineers have noted that there are some significant changes that have a degree of impact on how racks should be designed, installed, operated, maintained, and inspected.

Below we have summarised a few of the changes:

  • In part 2 of the new standard it clearly stipulates - ”The ongoing safety of the storage equipment shall be the responsibility of the end user”.
  • Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure the rack is being used as specified, and that damage is being reported, documented, and rectified.
  • A new clause in part 2 specifies the end user as being responsible for informal inspections and it clarifies that formal inspections should be undertaken by a competent person on an annual basis.
